Harmonics

Climbing the tree

sheep crop grass
around ancient stone circles
no more chest pains

enjoying the view –
the black bird
in the bare apple tree

returning home –
on the port wing
orange sunrise

snow mountains
in night clouds
lightning without sound

the birds and I
watch the valley mist creep
through our minds

at first
an apple blossom –
white butterfly

after the funeral –
the first daffodil
he will never see

under forestry pines –
old mountains
old language

Unfortunately, none of my published short stories appeared in e-zines. Publications that carry some of my short stories appear in the ‘Print and Other Publications’ tab.

Vision in Stone short story

Here is a fantasy short story published a number of years ago in the online magazine Roar and Thunder. The magazine has since gone on hiatus, so the story is no longer available. I offer it here as a way of keeping it ‘out there’. The story features a character I have written about a number of times, including in my yet-to-be-published fantasy verse novel The Silence Inside the World. I hope you enjoy ‘Vision in Stone’.

I’ve known Earl for almost ten years and, in that time, I’ve had the pleasure to study under and work alongside him. Earl’s concise yet illuminating assessments on my various writing projects have helped to elevate my craft and I’ve seen the same effect on audiences with his excellent presentation and teaching skills in festival panels, writing workshops and one-to-one mentorships. Earl is a great conversationalist, easy to get along with, and a joy to work with.

For over 20 years, Earl Livings has been my writing mentor. Through novel and short story drafts, great lapses of confidence and personal obstacles, he has been steady and true and kept me to the path when it seemed it was lost. His knowledge is wide, his methods engaging and useful, but it is particularly his passion for words that has kept me aligned. From his feedback, I have broken down pieces and built them back up to create work beyond what I thought I was capable. I am eternally grateful to have had Earl’s mentorship and the support he’s offered to invest in my own talents and aspirations and would recommend him to anyone wishing to do the same.
